Urgals Guide

The Urgals — Warriors of Alagaesia

The Urgals are one of the most misunderstood races in Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle. Initially presented as monstrous enemies, the Urgals are revealed over the course of the series to be a complex people with their own rich culture, traditions, and sense of honor.

Culture and Society

Urgal society is built around strength, combat, and tribal honor. Their greatest warriors earn the right to their horns — the larger the horns, the more respected the Urgal. The Kull, a subspecies standing over eight feet tall, are the most fearsome warriors in Alagaesia. Despite their warlike reputation, Urgals have their own art, music, and spiritual traditions that run deep.

From Enemies to Allies

Under Galbatorix's manipulation, the Urgals were used as shock troops against the Varden. But when the truth of their enslavement emerged, an unprecedented alliance formed. Urgal chieftain Nar Garzhvog proved that his people could be trusted allies, and by the series' end, Urgals are included in the pact that allows them to become Dragon Riders.
