Rider Swords

Rider Swords — Blades of Legend

The Rider swords are among the most iconic weapons in Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle. Each sword is uniquely crafted for its Rider by the legendary elven smith Rhunon, who forged every Rider's blade in the history of the order. These weapons are not merely functional — they are works of art imbued with magic.

How They Are Made

Rider swords are forged from brightsteel, a rare material found within meteorites. The forging process combines traditional smithing with elven magic, resulting in blades that are nearly indestructible, never lose their edge, and can channel the Rider's magical energy. Each sword matches the color of its Rider's dragon — a blue dragon means a blue blade, a red dragon a red blade.

Famous Swords

Zar'roc (Misery), the red sword of Morzan, was wielded by both Eragon and later reclaimed by Murtagh. Brisingr (Fire), Eragon's own sword, was forged by Rhunon using Eragon's body and bursts into flame when its name is spoken. Naegling was Oromis's golden blade. Tamerlein was an ancient green sword carried by Arya. Explore the lore of these legendary weapons in our lexicon.
