Murtagh
Murtagh — Born to a Dark Legacy
Murtagh, son of Morzan and Selena, is one of the most tragic and complex characters in Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle. Eragon's half-brother and the Rider of the red dragon Thorn, Murtagh is forced to serve Galbatorix after the king discovers his true name, compelling absolute obedience.
Murtagh first appears as a mysterious ally who helps Eragon escape the Ra'zac. Brave, skilled, and deeply scarred by his father's abuse, he quickly proves himself a valuable companion. But his capture by Galbatorix transforms him from ally to adversary — though never truly an enemy at heart.
The Struggle Within
What makes Murtagh compelling is his constant internal battle. Forced to fight against those he cares about, he searches desperately for a way to change his true name and free himself from Galbatorix's control. His relationship with Thorn mirrors this struggle — both are prisoners who find solace in their bond with each other. Discover more about Murtagh's journey in our lexicon.
