Galbatorix — The Mad King

Galbatorix is the primary antagonist of Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle and one of the most powerful beings in the history of Alagaesia. Once a promising young Dragon Rider, Galbatorix was driven to madness and vengeance by the loss of his first dragon, Jarnunvosk, at the hands of Urgals.

When the Dragon Rider elders refused to give him another dragon, Galbatorix's grief transformed into rage. He recruited twelve other Riders — the Forsworn — and waged a devastating war that destroyed the order of Dragon Riders and allowed him to seize control of the Empire.

A Century of Tyranny

For over a hundred years, Galbatorix ruled Alagaesia with absolute power. He hoarded Eldunari — the heart of hearts of dragons — to fuel his immense magical abilities. He suppressed knowledge, crushed dissent, and bent entire races to his will. Yet his greatest weakness was his inability to understand love, loyalty, and the bonds that connect others.
