Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle is an epic fantasy saga that has enchanted millions of readers. If you're new to the series or returning for a reread, here is the complete reading order.

The Main Series

Eragon (2003) begins when a farm boy discovers a mysterious blue stone that turns out to be a dragon egg. When it hatches, Eragon's life changes forever as he becomes the first new Dragon Rider in over a century. Eldest (2005) follows Eragon's training among the elves in Ellesmera while the Varden prepares for war. Brisingr (2008) deepens the conflict as Eragon confronts his family's dark legacy and forges his iconic blue sword. Inheritance (2011) brings the epic to its conclusion with the final battle against Galbatorix.

Companion Works

The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm (2018) contains three stories set after the main series, following Eragon and Saphira as they begin rebuilding the Dragon Riders. Paolini has indicated more books set in the world of Alagaesia are planned. Find more details in our lexicon.
