Eldunari Explained

Eldunari — The Heart of Hearts

The Eldunari, or Heart of Hearts, is one of the most fascinating concepts in Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle. An Eldunari is a gem-like organ that a dragon can choose to disgorge from its body, transferring its consciousness and magical energy into the stone. This allows a dragon's mind to survive even after its physical body dies.

An Eldunari glows with the color of its dragon and contains the full personality, memories, and wisdom of the dragon that created it. The older and more powerful the dragon, the more potent its Eldunari becomes.

Power and Peril

Eldunari serve as immense reservoirs of magical energy. A Rider who possesses an Eldunari can draw upon the dragon's strength to fuel spells far beyond their own capacity. This is how Galbatorix became so impossibly powerful — he hoarded hundreds of Eldunari taken from fallen dragons, using their enslaved consciousnesses to fuel his tyranny. The liberation of these Eldunari is a pivotal moment in the final book. Learn more in our lexicon.
