Dwarves of Farthen Dur
The Dwarves of Farthen Dur
The dwarves of Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle are a proud, stubborn, and fiercely independent people who have carved their civilization into the very mountains of Alagaesia. Their greatest stronghold, Farthen Dur, is a hollow mountain that houses the magnificent city of Tronjheim — a mile-high city carved from a single massive stalagmite.
Clans and Politics
Dwarven society is organized into thirteen clans, each with its own traditions, specialties, and political interests. The dwarven king is chosen through a complex process of clan votes and alliances. Hrothgar, king during the early books, welcomed Eragon and the Varden into Farthen Dur. After his death, Orik — Eragon's foster brother — was elected king, cementing the alliance between dwarves and Riders.
Craftsmanship and Culture
Dwarves are master smiths, miners, and builders. Their stonework is unrivaled, and their knowledge of gems and metals is encyclopedic. They worship their own gods, distinct from the beliefs of elves and humans, and their religious traditions play an important role in their society. Discover dwarven culture in our lexicon.
