Dragon Riders History
The History of the Dragon Riders
The Dragon Riders were once the greatest force for peace and justice in Alagaesia. For thousands of years, they served as guardians, diplomats, scholars, and warriors, maintaining balance among the races. Their fall at the hands of Galbatorix is one of the most tragic events in the history of Christopher Paolini's world.
The Founding Pact
The Dragon Riders were born from the Blood-Oath Celebration, a pact between elves and dragons that ended a devastating war between their species. An elf named Eragon — the first Rider — bonded with the white dragon Bid'Daum, establishing a partnership that would endure for millennia. Later, humans were included in the pact, expanding the order further.
The Fall and Restoration
The Riders' golden age ended when Galbatorix, a young Rider driven mad by the loss of his dragon, united with the Forsworn — thirteen traitorous Riders — and destroyed the order. For over a century, Galbatorix ruled Alagaesia as a tyrant. It fell to Eragon Shadeslayer and Saphira to restore the Riders and bring hope back to the land. Explore the full history in our lexicon.
