Alagaesia is a vast and diverse continent that serves as the setting for Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle. From frozen northern peaks to scorching southern deserts, the land is filled with wonder, danger, and history waiting to be discovered.

Key Regions

The Spine is the mountain range along the western coast where Eragon finds Saphira's egg. Du Weldenvarden, the great forest in the north, is home to the elves and the city of Ellesmera. The Beor Mountains in the southeast dwarf even the Spine and house the dwarven kingdom of Farthen Dur. The Hadarac Desert stretches across the center of the continent, a vast and treacherous wasteland.

Important Cities

Uru'baen (later renamed Ilirea) is the capital of the Empire and seat of Galbatorix's power. Ellesmera is the elven capital, hidden deep within Du Weldenvarden. Tronjheim, the city within Farthen Dur, is the dwarven stronghold. Surda, the independent nation south of the Empire, serves as a haven for the Varden. Discover every location in our lexicon.
